Podiatry
What is it?
A Podiatrist is a health professional who deals with prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.
The conditions Podiatrists treat include:
- Those resulting from bone and joint disorders e.g.arthritis
- Soft-tissue and muscular pathologies
- Neurological and circulatory diseases
- Sports injuries
- Biomechanical abnormalities
- Diabetes
Podiatrists are also able to diagnose and treat;
- Skin and nail disorders
- Corns
- Calluses
- In-growing toenails
If you have diabetes, Podiatrists are especially important to you. With diabetes, you have an increased risk of lower limb complications because you are more likely to experience reduced blood circulation and nerve degeneration in your feet and legs, which can decrease your ability to fight infection. Podiatrists manage pressure areas and prevent ulceration to keep you mobile.
Diabetes Australia recommends that people with diabetes have foot checks at least annually.
All of the Podiatry instruments used at Allied Health Central are sterilised under strict sterilisation protocol using an ultra sonic cleaner and an autoclave.
